Poppy - Dogs 4 Rescue

Poppy

More about Poppy

Poppy is a truly special girl—shy and sensitive, but with so much love to give. She may take a few quiet minutes to feel safe, but once she does, she gives you her whole heart. Her loyalty, affection, and sweetness shine through, and it’s impossible not to fall for her. She’s an absolute stealer of hearts.

Once she trusts you, Poppy is incredibly loving and affectionate—she adores being petted, will happily dish out kisses, and wants nothing more than to be close to you. She forms strong, soulful bonds with her people and becomes a devoted companion. She sleeps soundly through the night cuddled up on the bed and is always happiest when by your side.

She has spent some time on foster where she was the star guest – clean, non-destructive, and house-trained but like many Staffies, she’s not a fan of the rain. She also finds household tools like the hoover, mop, and even hairbrushes stressful, and can react anxiously around them—this is improving with reassurance and understanding.

Poppy does have a few quirks—she may grumble when her harness is removed after a walk, and she has a habit of sneaking off with the occasional sock or dropped item. She has shown some resource guarding around these stolen treasures, so she’ll need an experienced home that can manage this with calm, confident handling. With clear boundaries, routine, and positive reinforcement, these behaviours are very manageable. Poppy is a clever, food-motivated girl who is eager to please and thrives with consistent guidance.

She walks well on the lead in general, though she may pull when she’s eager to investigate a smell. She’s made great strides in her confidence outdoors—she used to walk glued to your legs, but now she’s starting to enjoy sniffing and exploring more. In quieter areas, she relaxes and takes things in, but busy environments (like markets or towns) can still overwhelm her, so a calmer, more rural setting would suit her best.
Poppy also travels well in the car and has enjoyed weekends away and day trips, including a holiday in the Lake District where she handled new environments and longer walks well. She was walked twice a day for up to 3–4 hours on holiday, and more moderate walks at home—she enjoys her exercise but is also happy to snooze the day away in between.

Socially, Poppy is selective with other dogs. She’s had some good interactions, especially off-lead at a distance, but on-lead greetings can be more reactive. Her foster carer has seen progress, but for now, we’re looking for a home where she can be the only pet. She cannot live with cats—she has shown strong chasing behaviour.

Poppy would like a home with company throughout the day but she will also settle alone for a couple of hours.

We are looking for an adult-only home for Poppy, ideally with experience of the breed.

About our dogs

Our dogs are microchipped, vaccinated, neutered, flea & wormed and have full travel documents where appropriate. If they are arriving from overseas they will have had all the pre-travel tests as required by DEFRA and are transported through the TRACES system.

We pride ourselves on being honest and open about our dogs, sharing all we know about them including any known behaviour challenges or medical conditions.

Like all responsible rescues we offer Lifetime Rescue Back Up to all the dogs who come through our doors.

One month trial

We want our dogs to be happy in their homes for life, which is why we offer a full one month trial. As they start to relax and their personalities shine through you’ll know if your home life suits and how they get along with any other pets.

If it’s not the right fit, they can come back to rescue and get straight back to playing, and we will try to find you a more suitable match. There aren’t enough homes out there so please don’t give up if your first dog doesn’t work out.
