Obi is a magnificent, beautiful bear who might look a little imposing at first glance, but underneath those big bones is a sensitive soul who really just wants to feel safe, loved and understood.
Obi has lived a very sheltered life, spending much of his time outdoors in a role where he was expected to be protective. He’s never really had the opportunity to experience all the lovely things that being a much-loved family dog should bring. And that’s exactly what we’d love to change for him.
We’re looking for someone who can show Obi that life has so much more to offer than the little world he’s always known. A warm, comfortable home, kind people, adventures at his own pace, plenty of fuss and, most importantly, the security of knowing he’s finally someone’s companion rather than having a job to do.
Obi is incredibly sweet-natured and sensitive. He can be worried, particularly around men, and will need someone patient who understands that trust takes time. Once he feels comfortable, he absolutely loves affection and having his people around. He’s a clever boy who already knows how to sit and give paw, and he’s always happy to receive a fuss.
Obi genuinely enjoys the company of other dogs and loves to play! He can initially be a little defensive around unfamiliar dogs, so introductions need to be calm, controlled and handled sensibly. Once he understands the other dog isn’t a threat, he really does love making friends.
Obi has always been used to spending time outdoors, so he’ll need a family willing to help him gradually adjust to a more comfortable home life. He can become stressed when left alone indoors, and this can result in toileting accidents or destructive behaviour, even if another dog is present. He is much more settled outside when left, where he doesn’t tend to destroy things. An appropriate, secure and comfortable outdoor space or outhouse would be helpful while he learns to cope with being left.
We are looking for someone with previous large-breed experience who understands the needs of a dog of Obi’s size. A patient, understanding home that will give him time to settle and build confidence is essential. Someone willing to work on his fears gently, particularly around men, without putting pressure on him. A secure garden and suitable space for him to enjoy the outdoors safely would be important. A friendly, well-socialised doggy companion could be lovely for him, provided introductions are managed carefully.
We know he has a lot to learn about the world, but we also know there is a wonderful companion waiting to blossom when someone gives him the chance.
Obi has spent enough of his life looking after the world around him. Now it’s his turn to be looked after.
