Lovable Lenton is a very special little dog who has been in our care since February 2025. He initially appeared to be a friendly, affectionate and sociable boy, but as we got to know him better, some more complex behavioural needs became apparent. Lenton has spent an extended period with us being carefully assessed and supported by our behaviour team, and he is now doing wonderfully in foster.
Lenton is an incredibly affectionate and people-oriented boy who loves nothing more than being close to his person. His foster mum describes him as a complete cuddle bug who loves belly rubs, sitting on your lap and snuggling up on the sofa. He is housetrained, non-destructive, enjoys his walks and loves exploring the world around him.
He has made fantastic progress with his confidence, lead walking, crate training and muzzle training, and when he is calm and settled, he is a joy to have around. He has shown us just how loving and devoted he can be, forming incredibly strong bonds with the people he trusts.
However, Lenton is not a straightforward dog and needs an experienced adopter who fully understands his behavioural needs and is committed to lifelong management. Once Lenton has bonded with you and feels safe, he is incredibly loyal and devoted. He forms very strong attachments to his person and has never shown aggression towards the person he is bonded with. His difficulties tend to arise when other people become involved, particularly when he feels anxious, overwhelmed or that he has lost control of a situation.
There may be an element of Lenton trying to protect or control access to his person when other people are involved, although we cannot say this is definitely the motivation behind his behaviour. What we do know is that his incidents have occurred in situations where multiple people are present or where there has been a change in the social environment around him. When he becomes highly aroused, he can escalate very quickly and has bitten. His adopter will therefore need to be confident recognising his subtle signs of stress, understanding his triggers and carefully managing situations before he becomes overwhelmed.
Lenton can also become jealous or possessive of his person around other dogs within the home. He may struggle if another dog approaches his person or becomes involved in interactions with them. He is generally very sociable with other dogs when out and about and enjoys meeting and interacting with them in neutral environments. However, because people becoming involved in interactions with other dogs is a known trigger for him, he must be the only pet in his new home.
We are looking for a home with a single experienced adult, with no children and no other pets. Lenton would ideally have someone around for most or all of the day, as he struggles with being left alone and thrives on companionship. His ideal home will be calm, quiet and predictable, allowing him to build a strong bond with his person while carefully managing situations involving visitors or unfamiliar people.
Lenton must never have unrestricted access to unfamiliar people within the home. His adopter will need to be comfortable using separation, a crate and/or muzzle management when necessary to keep everyone safe, while introductions are handled gradually and appropriately.
Despite his challenges, Lenton has many wonderful qualities. During his extensive assessment with us, he has never shown aggression towards staff, despite being handled by numerous people, and when he feels safe and settled he is friendly, affectionate and keen to interact. He enjoys human company, walks, training and lots of fuss, and his recent foster stay has shown us just how happy he can be in the right environment.
Lenton is a very cute, loving and incredibly loyal little boy, but finding the right home for him is about much more than how adorable he is. He needs an experienced person who can see beyond his difficult moments, understand his anxiety and give him the structure, patience and management he needs to thrive.
