Catch us on Channel 5 this Sunday – and help us fund the next stage of our project!

July 15, 2019 by Emma Billington

We are very excited to announce that later this month we’ll be back on Channel 5 as we’ve been featured in their brand new series, My Houseful of Animals! The light-hearted TV show, which shares the stories of animal lovers and fellow rescuers alike, airs on the 21stJuly.

Although we had reservations about the initial project, this one came unexpectedly and is a welcome surprise. It more accurately reflects the nature of what we do at Dogs 4 Rescue and offers some lovely insights into what daily life here is like. Most importantly we’re thrilled as it gets the street dogs from abroad some much-needed exposure and enabled us to get across our positive message regarding rescue dogs, in particular those saved from abroad.

What it doesn’t show unfortunately is our fabulous dog park and the progress we’ve made in making it what it is today. We’d like to use this opportunity to ask for another push to help us to achieve our vision – and use the exposure from the Channel 5 feature to help us fund the next stage of our fantastic project!

Foreign Dogs are Under Attack; From the Most Unlikely of Organisations

January 8, 2019 by Emma Billington

In defence of dogs we write this post out of utter horror at the latest tactics by the big names in rescue (RSPCA and Dogs Trust) to destroy foreign dog rescue.

The same question never goes away for us and we defend it daily from visitors and online critics, yet is still something I can barely believe is even a consideration.  These big names seem to have picked up on some public opinion and jumped on it, fuelling it and using it to their advantage.

Separation Anxiety in Dogs

December 17, 2018 by Emma Billington

Dogs naturally do not have separation anxiety.  Those who have not had homes before (i.e. have not lived with people) do not have separation anxiety i.e. many of our street dogs from abroad, but it doesn’t mean they cannot develop it, and fast.  With the correct training it can also go away again.  The key is to watch for the signs and do something about it before it escalates.  This is the same with any unwanted behaviour.

The loss of big Winston… his incredible story

November 5, 2018 by Emma Billington

Winston first came through our doors in 2016 by chance. The Bulgarian bus arrived with our intake and we were there and then asked to look after him for a couple of weeks for the rescue who had brought him over until they could pick him up. We had no choice as he had no other option.

The only dog I’ve ever been frightened of… [Read more…]

Becoming the Crazy Dog Lady

October 31, 2018 by Emma Billington

They say life begins at 40. Well mine really began when I gave up “normal” life and started rescuing doggies.
When I was young I imagined, like most girls I guess, that I would grow up, get married, have a couple of kids, a career etc. Maybe get a dog- (probably a Labrador as I had an andrex puppy teddy from birth). How wrong I was ….and how glad I am (in the most part).

One day I found a starving staffie on the end of a chain, being bred from for beer money, while searching the neighbour’s gardens for the source of a harrowing crying. This day/dog changed my life unrecognisably. The most beautiful little olive-eyed girl, the one I didn’t get to save, and my one regret. That day changed my life forever. Little did I know then that there would be no marriage, no “normal life”, holidays, kids, the usual – it would become a vocation – to spend my life trying to save those of the most in need.
