Fostering a dog – what’s it all about?

October 23, 2018 by Emma Billington

Flexible fostering options to suit everyone

Fostering is very important here at Dogs 4 Rescue. As much as we try and create a home from home environment here for our dogs, time spent in a ‘real home’ is invaluable and provides enriching experiences for them that they would only get outside of a rescue environment. Here are just a few ways you can get involved – and three amazing benefits of fostering for our dogs for you and for them.

Foster as much or as little as you like….

Samira’s Happy Ending….. one of our Background Dogs

October 18, 2018 by Emma Billington

Samira came to us many months ago, very afraid along with a few others who had had some rough years in a pound in Romania.

She was timid, she never asked for anything but would always be around – she was surprised to feel love and kindness and it took a little while to build her trust. She wasn’t as happy as the others here no matter what we tried for her.

She was completely overlooked, almost as though she was a black dog and we were all baffled why she waited such a long time to get a trial as we couldn’t find any “faults” with her.
But we learn that some dogs just wait longer than others for their forever homes to come up and what a happy ending this one is. Her new mums’ email below shows why she waited so long – she was waiting for Emma, her new mum, for her time to shine.

5 reasons we rescue dogs from abroad

October 13, 2018 by Emma Billington

A UK Rescue dog                                    Romanian Rescue Dogs

One of the most frequently asked questions and ‘justifications’ that we are forced to give is why we ‘bring dogs over from abroad when there are so many dogs here in pounds in the UK’. This controversy over foreign rescue dogs baffles us for a number of reasons.

We believe that if you truly love dogs, no organisation working hard to save them should be ‘controversial’. Here we share the five main reasons we rescue from abroad – and several home truths which we hope will help people to understand and enable them to cultivate a fresh perspective on dog rescue here and abroad. Chris’ Blog on Fostering (and then Adopting) and Monty’s Happy Ending…

October 12, 2018 by Emma Billington

“I’ve volunteered at Dogs4Resuce for about 2 years, mostly working with the feral / semi feral / scared dogs (everyone knows Tiger!).

I first seen Monty in June this year when he arrived from Cyprus Dog Rescue the day before. He was in a room and no one had been able to touch him. Knowing that not only was he semi feral, but also black in colour, he would not stand much chance of been adopted, or even fostered out. I spent a little time in the room and was able to gently stroke him, however he was shaking with fear.

A few weeks later I decided I would foster Monty. Myself, Emma and Lou we were to able guide him into a cage so that he could be carried to my car. The look of fear in his eyes was so sad to see, he honestly had no idea what was going to happen to him. [Read more…]

Why do black dogs get left behind in rescue?

October 10, 2018 by Emma Billington

Did you know that black dogs struggle to find homes more than lighter coloured dogs? It’s a trend that we’ve certainly noticed here – but sadly it’s not an issue that’s isolated to our rescue. We have so many sweet black babies here, all with differing personalities, histories and temperaments – but one tragic thing in common – they are all harder to rehome. [Read more…]
